Apple released iOS 6 GM on Wednesday at the iPhone 5 special media event in Yerba Buena Center for Arts. With this launch came the need for the jailbreak community to get to work on coming up with a jailbreak solution for all those that like having control over their devices whilst still having the latest operating system. MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team has come to the rescue and he has released an update for Redsn0w.
Redsn0w 0.9.13 has been updated to support the GM seed of iOS 6 and this comes in the form of a tethered jailbreak on iPhone 4, 3GS and iPod touch 4. Considering that the GM version of a new release of iOS generally tends to be the final build that eventually goes live to the public and ships with new hardware, it is safe to assume that iOS 6.0 will be jailbreakable from the start but only on the older generation limera1nable A4 based devices. These are the iPHone 4, iPhone 3GS and the iPod touch 4. For the moment though this will be a tethered jailbreak solution.
We should mention that this tethered jailbreak wont install Cydia yet. It will only give you root access which will enable you to install the custom packages of your choice using SSH. So, unless you are an advanced user or a developer it is best to stay away from this jailbreak until Cydia is fully compatible to work with iOS 6.
For those who are interested all you have to do is download iOS 6 GM and restore your device to it via the latest version of iTunes. Download Redsn0w 0.9.13dev4. Start Redsn0w and select Extras from the main interface followed by the Select IPSW option. Point to iOS 6 GM firmware and from the main screen select the Jailbreak option to start the process. Redsn0w will present you with onscreen instructions on how to enter your device into DFU mode. Once in DFU mode the jailbreaking procedure will start automatically. Once done your device will be rebooted into a jailbroken state. Redsn0w is available for both Mac and Windows.
